Intellectual Property Law -- Know It!

As flattering as it is to have work copied it is a serious violation of intellectual property and copyright law. As defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization, "Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. ... Copyright, which includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems and plays, films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs."

Ignorance is not bliss. If you are caught stealing, borrowing or otherwise reproducing artwork or content from web sites or printed work you can be prosecuted. If found guilty the fines can be rather steep! Saying you did not know is not a viable excuse. So what are the odds someone will find out their work has been replicated without permission? Higher than you might expect.
